Philips 2012: Neue Hardwarebasis für TV-Geräte ab 6000er Serie

Tachchen,

  2. During the design of the PNX85500 (a.k.a. TV550), Trident took over the people and IP from Philips Semiconductors. Trident was already active in the chips for TV market, and they had their own IP. The fusion of their combined IP led to a design named .. “Fusion”. Then, before the firmware of the Fusion was finished, Trident filed for Chapter 11 (pre-bankrupcy), and some of their designers started looking for other jobs. Combined with the usual troubles of introducing a new platformthis has led to a significant delay, ending last week with the commercial release.

TVs based on the TV550 had already been released on time. It is a fine TV platform, but a little underpowered for today’s demanding Smart TV functions. The TV550 is the successor of the TV500, which itself was a fusion of the TV543 platform and the PNX5100 post-processor. Those generations depended heavily on multiple TriMedia VLIW media processor cores from Philips.

Sigma has now bought the TV branch of Trident, with most of the people and the IP including the finished Fusion, and will continue working on the (next) Fusion. Sigma was already active in the area of TV processing, owning the Gennum VXP IP. The Sigma SMP8654 is in the WDTV Live Hub, one of the better media players. Sigma can become an important player.

TP Vision has taken measures to ensure the continuity of the software development in Bangalore. TP Vision is the new company that produces the “Philips” TVs for the European and South-American markets. Almost all of the people of the former Philips Business Group TV are now with TP Vision, as is their knowledge and IP. I am one of them, and we have ambitious plans for the future.

The shareholders of TP Vision are TPV of Taiwan (70%) and Philips. TPV is the 3rd largest TV manufacturer in the world, and the 1st largest monitor maker (including all the Philips branded monitors). They already use / own the “AOC” brand, the “Philips” brand for China, and they already manufactured many mid-range TVs for Philips (based on MediaTek platforms) and will continue to do so for TP Vision. TP Vision (with the former Philips BG TV crew) will continue to design (in Nederland and Belgium) and manufacture (in Hungary, Brazil and Argentina) and market (in many countries) the high-end TV range for the “Philips” brand.
