Philips 2013: Der “halb erfolgreiche” Versuch, DTS zu integrieren

2013 hat es Philips nach Jahren des Bettelns (Andere würden “hinter der Konkurrenz hinterherlaufen” sagen) geschafft, DTS in einige TV-Serien zu integrieren. So wurden die TVs der 7x08er, 8x08er und 9708er via Firmware-Update dafür aktualisiert. Theoretisch (und praktisch) wäre ein Unterstützung in der 6xx8er auch möglich. Die DTS-Funktionalität wurde jedoch aus “Marketing-Gründen” via Software deaktiviert.

Man kann den Willen, DTS zu integrieren, beglückwünschen. Jedoch ist die Umsetzung nur halbherzig und hätte besser und damit vollständig sein können.

Was ist Fakt?

DTS wird aktuell nur via USB- und DLNA-Zuspielung unterstützt. Über das TV-Signal wird kein DTS verbreitet. Als Testdateien für folgende Auswertung wurden jeweils ein DTS- und ein DTS-HD-Stream herangezogen.

Was ist das Problem?

Wer ein externes Gerät – z.B. ein Blu-ray-Player – via HDMI an den TV anschließt und den DTS-Ton zu eine Audioanlage durch den TV durchschleifen will, bekommt aktuell nur Stereo-Ton zu hören. Man könnte argumentieren, dass man den Ton vom Blu-ray-Player direkt an eine Audioanlage anschließen soll, um das “Stereo-Problem” zu umgehen. Jedoch gibt es in diesem Setup das Problem der Ton-Bild-Synchronisation: Dadurch, dass TV-Geräte heutzutage immer Bildverbesserungsalgorithmen integriert haben, muss der Ton verzögert ausgegeben werden, damit die Lippensynchronität wieder hergestellt wird. Diese Problem besteht nicht, wenn der TV sowohl für Bild als auch Ton verantwortlich ist (was beim Durchschleifen des Tons der Fall ist). Nicht alle externe Geräte besitzen die Möglichkeit den Ton verzögert auszugeben. Wenn doch, ist es ein Glücksspiel die genaue Verzögerung einzustellen.

Was ist die Ursache?

Bei der Verbindung zweier Geräte via HDMI findet ein Handshake statt, bei dem die Geräte aushandeln, was alles unterstützt wird. So melden die Philips TVs der oben genannten TV-Serien folgende Audiounterstützung via HDMI (EDID-Informationen):

  • LPCM: 2-channel, 16/20/24 bit depths at 32/44/48/88/96 kHz
  • AC-3: 6-channel,  640k max. bit rate at 32/44/48 kHz

Ein Blu-ray-Player würde somit sehen, dass kein DTS unterstützt wird (sondern nur LPCM und AC-3 [Dolby Digital 5.1]) und würde den DTS-Ton auf 2.0 Stereo (LPCM) konvertieren. Falls der Blu-ray-Player das Herunterrechnen nicht kann, würde gar kein Ton am TV ankommen.

Fazit

Philips hat es endlich geschafft, DTS zu integrieren. Leider nicht vollständig, was sehr ärgerlich ist.

Viel ärgerlicher ist jedoch, dass keiner bei Philips im Stande bzw. gewillt ist zu beantworten, ob ein Update noch kommen wird, um eine vollständige Unterstützung auch via HDMI-Zuspielung zu gewährleisten. Hier muss noch was passieren! Mit Dolby Digital 5.1 geht das Weiterleiten/Durchschleifen ja auch: Via USB, DLNA und HDMI.
