mit den kommenden 2025er Google TV-basierten Philips OLED-TVs wird es eine Änderung an der Speicherausstattung geben. Davon profitieren Nutzer, die ohne externen Speicher auskommen und trotzdem Apps mit mehr Speicherbedarf nutzen wollen.

Zu den Serien, die in den Genuß des Speicher-Upgrades kommen, gehören die Pentonic 1000-basieren OLED-TVs:

Bisher waren Philips Android bzw. Google TV immer mit 16 GB Flash-Speicher bestückt. Dies ändert sich nun und die oben genannten High-End-Serien erhalten 32 GB Flash-Speicher. Die Google TVs der Mid-Range behalten weiterhin 16 GB (hierzu gehört 2025 nur die PUS8100 Serie). Ob es auch eine Änderung in Bezug auf den Hauptspeicher gibt, ist aktuell noch nicht klar. Bisher waren maximal 4 GB DRAM verbaut.

Wer jedoch jetzt denkt, dass einem die vollen 32 GB (abzüglich der reinen Google TV-Installation) zur Verfügung stehen, der wird enttäuscht sein. Am Beispiel der vergangenen Jahre sieht man, dass von den bisherigen 16 GB Flash-Speicher nach einem Werksreset nur ca. 5,3 GB freier Speicherplatz vorhanden ist. Woran liegt das?

Die Ursache liegt in der vorhandenen Recovery-Möglichkeit, wenn der TV in einem undefinierten Zustand ist (beispielsweise beim Philips Logo hängenbleibt) und nicht mehr richtig startet. Um dann den TV wieder zu einem erfolgreichen Neustart zu bewegen, kommt die sogenannte One Button Reset-Methode zum Einsatz. Hier wird eine vorhandene parallele Android/Google TV Installation geladen. Die Platzverteilung kann man sich ungefähr so vorstellen (also so ist mein Verständnis):

(Es könnte aber auch sein, dass es “3 Partitionen” gibt, wovon 5,3 GB für Apps zur Verfügung stehen, und die restlichen 10,7 GB in die zwei Android-Image-Partitionen mit je 5,35 GB aufgeteilt sind. Kann ich nicht genau sagen.)

Findet ein normales Software-Update statt, wird immer die jeweilige andere Android-Image-Partition aktualisiert und im Anschluss von dieser der TV gestartet. Bei einem Update mit einem Upgrade_Loader bzw. PKG-Datei werden immer beide Android-Image-Partitionen parallel aktualisiert und der TV startet mit einem Factory Reset.

Ob die Erhöhung auf 32 GB Flashspeicher eine Anforderung seitens Google für neue TVs mit Android TV 14 (ja, die 2025er Google TVs haben Version 14 unter der Haube) ist, oder ob man einfach den Kunden einen Gefallen tun will, kann ich nicht genau sagen. Da die 2023er und 2024er High-End Google TVs auf derselben Plattform basieren, werden auch diese TVs in den Genuß von Android 14-basiertem Google TV kommen.
